Should I serve Marro Cold or Warm?

Why Warming Your Cat's Marro Meal Makes All the Difference

Warming Your Cat's Marro

Cats are notoriously picky eaters. Beyond choosing their favourite recipe, setting up the right bowl, and picking a quiet spot in the house, another crucial factor is food temperature.

If your cat ever turns their nose up at their new meals, we recommend gently warming their food. This could be the secret to mealtime success.

Why Cats Prefer Warm Food

In the wild, a cat’s natural prey is consumed fresh, meaning their instincts drive them to prefer food served at roughly "mouse temperature".

Cold food served directly from the fridge lacks the strong scent profile that triggers a cat’s eating instincts. Warming their Marro meal releases subtle aromas and enhances natural flavours, making the food significantly more enticing, especially for fussy eaters.

What Our Tastemakers Found

We put this theory to the test with our Tastemakers panel in a controlled 2-day, 2-bowl trial. We offered 148 cats two bowls side-by-side: one with gently warmed Marro recipes, and one served chilled straight from the fridge (with bowl positions swapped on day two to ensure fair testing).

The results we found:

  • Stronger Initial Attraction: 64% of cats went straight to smell the warmed meal first. With cats going on to eat more of the warm meals compared to the chilled meals.

  • Chilled Food Overlooked: Only 23.5% of cats inspected the chilled meal first.

Warming the food significantly increases overall meal aroma, capturing your cat's interest from the moment the bowl touches the floor.

"I realised that my cat enjoyed the warmed food more than the chilled as he could smell the food and seemed to be very relaxed after eating the warmed food. My cat has been used to eating food cold or at room temperature, but warmed-up food seems to entice his senses a bit more, and he seems to look forward to meal times more when warmed up."

How to Safely Warm Your Cat's Marro Serving

To get the best out of your cat's meal without compromising nutrition or safety, follow these simple steps:

  1. Microwave: Transfer the portion into a microwave-safe dish and heat on a low setting for 10 to 15 seconds, stirring midway through.

  2. Hot Water Bath: Place an unopened Marro pouch or portion in a bowl of warm (not boiling) water for a few minutes until it reaches room temperature or slightly warmer.

  3. Always Check the Temperature: Mix the food thoroughly to avoid hot spots, and test a small amount on your wrist before serving. It should feel lukewarm to the touch, never hot.

Tip: Never serve food hot. The goal is simply to bring out the natural aromas and match a cat's body temperature for a comfortable, irresistible meal.
